The main direction of the research work of the department is "Formation and development of the Kazakh literary language, its study and the culture of use." At present, the teaching staff of the department conducts research in areas related to the grammar of the Kazakh language, language history, the communicative nature of the functional style, the theory of cognitive language, the actual problems of teaching the Kazakh language.
The department regularly holds a scientific seminar on topical issues of Kazakh linguistics. There is also a circle of students (Linguists of the XXI century) (head: Ph.D., associate professor Omirbekova Zh.K.).
The chair organizes conferences, symposia, congresses at the national and international level.
Annually, the traditional international theoretical and theoretical conference "Akhmet Baitursynov's Readings", devoted to the scientific founder of Kazakh linguistics, to the educator, to the figure Alash Akhmet Baitursynuly, is conducted by direct participation and organization of the members of the department. In addition to Russian scientists, well-known scientists from Turkey, Germany, Russia, intellectuals involved in Akhmetology, residents of Astana, students, doctoral students and undergraduates take part in the conference.
In 2007, the scientific and theoretical conference "Kazakh Literary Language: Historical Tradition, the Future of Traditions" was held, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of such scientists as I. Kenesbaev, M. Balakayev, G. Musabaev. The conference was attended by teachers of higher educational institutions of Almaty, Pavlodar and Astana, representatives of scientific schools of scientists. At the conference there were sections "Problems of the literary language", "Language culture".
In 2008, the republic celebrated the 70th anniversary of the famous scientist M.Sergaliyev. In honor of this cultural event, the republican scientific and theoretical conference "The Stylistics of the Kazakh Language and Language Culture" was held.
In 2014, within the framework of the "Kazakhstan - 2050" strategy, a republican scientific and theoretical conference was held dedicated to the Message of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Kazakhstan Way - 2050: Unified Goal, Common Interests, Unified Future" and the 70th birthday of the Doctor of Philology, Professor T. Abdygaliyeva, the republican scientific and practical conference "The Mirror of the Kazakh Spirit" was organized in the framework of A. Baytursynov's readings in the traditional direction "The Kazakh Language - the Spiritual Basis - 2014".
In 2016 within the framework of the scientific project "Kazakh linguistic and folklore studies" the republican scientific conference "The present and future of Kazakh linguistic and folklore studies" dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held. Within the framework of "Readings of Ahmet Baitursynov" an international theoretical and theoretical conference "Spiritual foundation of an independent country" , dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the national liberation uprising of 1916 and the 25th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
From February 24 to March 6, 2017 an international scientific and methodical seminar "Mother tongue square: teaching, research problems" was held, on March 17 we held a scientific seminar "Sergaliev-2017".
A research project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the theme "Kazakh linguistic and folklore studies (studying on epic language materials)." The head is Professor Zh. Zhakypov.

For 2019, the share of teaching staff participating in funded fundamental and applied and educational projects is 53% of the total.
In 2020, Sarseke Gulnar Adebietkyzy participated in the competition and became a visiting scholar, specialist in linguistics at the University of Maryland (USA).
The department submitted 3 applications for participation in the competition for grant funding of scientific and (or) scientific and technical projects. 2 applications for the competition for 2020-2022 (27 months):
1. Historical dictionary of the Kazakh language (Scientific adviser: Kenzhalin K.K.);
2. Expansion of the information and cultural space of the state language in a multilingual environment. (Supervisor: Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Sarekenova K.K.);
1 application for the competition for 2021-2023:
1. New directions of Kazakh lexicography: theoretical and practical problems of compiling modern multilingual dictionaries (Supervisor: Doctor of Philology, Professor G. Sagidolda).
