Seminar – (master class) on the topic: "MEDIA-DISCURSIVE COMPETENCE IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES»

Within the framework of the School of Pedagogical Excellence for young teachers of the Faculty of Philology on 31.05.2022, Dr. H.D., Acting Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Philology Beisembayeva Gulshat Zeynelkhabidenovna held a seminar (master class) on the topic: "MEDIA-DISCURSIVE COMPETENCE IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES." The organizer of the seminar was the chairman of the School of Pedagogical Excellence Sagynadin Gulnaz Sagynadinkyzy.

        The main focus of the seminar was on the problem of the development of media-discursive competence among students in foreign language classes.

The following issues were updated:

            1. Are there any impact of classes aimed at the development of media-discursive competence on the conversational skills of students?

            2. What is the level of media-discursive competence of teachers?

            3. What is the level of media-discursive competence of students?

       The speaker explained in detail the principles of studying media-discursive competence in teaching foreign languages both at the secondary school level and at the university level. The stages of achieving the set goals were presented, such as:

       - organizing and conducting a project class aimed at developing media-discursive competence and determining the impact of the latter on the speaking skills of students;

       - compilation of an online questionnaire to determine the level of media-discursive competence of teachers and students, through the survey administration software - Google Forms, which is part of the free web editor Google Docs Editors offered by Google.

            The speaker clearly demonstrated practical calculations of project lessons with a focus group of 9th grade students of gymnasium schools to familiarize themselves with the procedure for introducing media literacy into educational activities. The students were randomly selected, representing a multi-level group - students with a lower level of language proficiency / students with a higher level of language proficiency, as well as persons aged 14 to 16 years. The respondents were teachers of foreign languages, students of the ninth grades of the Nur-Sultan school.

            In conclusion, practical recommendations were presented as:

            - involvement of authentic material in the form of advertising media resources in the learning process, since it is the advertising influence that is ubiquitous and necessary in the formation of media competencies;

            - to conduct the discipline "media-discursive competence" in the doctoral program, as well as among the mandatory competencies of a modern teacher, since they are the main facilitators in the learning process.

            The seminar was held at a high scientific and methodological level, provoking a lively discussion among the participants of the seminar and was highly appreciated by both the guests of the seminar and the Dean of PF – Beisenbai A.B.

            The presented presentation was replete with rich illustrative material: questionnaire data, developed models of conducted classes, authentic material, etc.
