Regional Subject Olympiad in Foreign Philology

On January 12, 2023, the Department of Foreign Philology of the Faculty of Philology of L.N.Gumilev ENU organized a Regional Subject Olympiad in Foreign Philology (English and German) among students of schools in Astana and Akmola region.

The Olympiad began with a welcoming speech by the Executive Secretary of the Admissions Committee of the L.N. Gumilev ENU Kokaev O.S., Dean of the Faculty of Philology Beisembai A.B., Head of the Department of Foreign Philology A.E. Bizhkenova.

It was noted that the main task of the Olympiad is to increase the interest of schoolchildren in the profession of a philologist linguist, as well as to identify the level of their training in English and German. At the same time, this event was also of a career-oriented nature. All speakers emphasized the role of Gumilev ENU as a leading educational institution, on the basis of which specialists in foreign languages are trained qualitatively, and invited graduates of this year to enroll in the national university.

This year the Olympiad was held in an offline format according to the approved schedule from 15.00 – 18.00 h. A total of over 80 students from 20 schools took part in the Olympiad, including Bilim Innovation Lyceum, metropolitan schools №14, №89,92, №38, №54 named after A. Seidimbek, No.53 named after B. Momyshuly, No. 57 named after M. Zhusup, No. 59, No. 8, No.79, №70, №32, №52, №46, Binom school lyceum named after A. Baitursynov, Binom school named after A. Bukeikhan, specialized lyceum No. 82 “Daryn", secondary school of Shubara, Kosshy village, Talapker village, Akmola region, gymnasium.

The Olympiad was organized in 2 stages. The 1st written stage consisted of listening and receptive reading tasks (two versions of texts from the IELTS and TestDaF series of tasks were proposed). 40 minutes were allocated to complete written tasks.

Stage 2 – oral speaking. Each student pulled out a ticket with a question and without preparation had to speak spontaneously on a given topic for 2 minutes. 26 participants from 62 in English and 8 students from 19 in German were admitted to the second stage.

The jury was attended by leading teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology. They worked for several hours, carefully checking the written answers and listening to the oral presentations of the participants of the Olympiad.

In English:

3rd place – Moldagasym Ayazhan, BINOM SCHOOL named after A. Bukeikhan, teacher - Kachkovskaya Gulbanu Alpysbaevna

3rd place – Tashmakhanova Malika, 60 school-lyceum, teacher - Bazarova Elena Vladimirovna.

3rd place – Rakhimbekova Janel, 92 lyceum school, teacher - Karteeva Ainur Turganovna

In German:

1st place – Ilya Piskun, 46 gymnasium school, teacher Ulzhan Ashimovna Rakhmedyanova.

2nd place – Nurgozhina Laura, 46 gymnasium school, teacher Rakhmedyanova Ulzhan Ashimovna.

3rd place – Zhanuzakova Gulnaz, 46 gymnasium school, teacher - Serikbayeva Roza Mazhitovna.

We note that, in general, the readiness of schoolchildren in English and German is good. The motivation of the students is quite high. There is a great hope that the best students of the schools of the capital will choose the Department of Foreign Philology to teach their future profession.
