According to the plan of the university, on January 17, 2019, at the Department of Theory and Practice of Foreign Languages of the Eurasian National University named after L. N. Gumilyov a subject Olympiad in English was held in the format of the IELTS.
Registration of participants in the subject Olympiad and their accompanying English teachers and class teachers began at 9.00. According to the results, 418 schoolchildren and teachers of secondary educational institutions of Astana and Akmola region were registered.
The opening of the Olympiad was held in the conference hall of the educational laboratory building, where the following personnel made speeches: the Head of the center for vocational guidance and testing Aralkhanov Maksat Salykovich and Deputy Director of the Department for Academic Issues Akhmetova Sholpan Toleuovna. Schoolchildren heard from representatives of the university administration the instructions and wishes of success in participating in the Olympiad, as well as brief information about the upcoming Open Doors Days, which will be held at L.N. Gumilyov ENU in a week. Schoolchildren were interested in the changes that are taking place this year in the approaches to the UNT. L. N. Gumilev ENU will carry out explanatory work on the new requirements for the UNT during the Open Days, where all the participants of the Olympiad were invited by the university administration. The deputy dean of the Faculty of Philology Kozhakhmetova Gulsara Amangeldievna made a welcoming speech from the leadership of the faculty and told the participants of the Olympiad about the structure of the faculty, graduating departments, educational programs and student clubs.
To participate in the IELTS Olympiad at L.N. Gumilyov ENU arrived 385 students of 11 and 10 grades of Astana and Akmola region, accompanied by 38 teachers of English from 45 secondary schools (gymnasiums, lyceums, BIL, secondary schools): 1, 3, 4, 6, 10, 13, 15, 17, 19, 22, 31, 32, 35, 37, 38, 40, 41, 48, 50, 52, 53, 56, 59, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 79, 80, 81, 82, 85, BIL, Koyandy Secondary School, Economic Lyceum.
The Olympiad was held in three stages: 1st stage - listening, 2nd stage - reading, 3rd stage - speaking. The participants of the subject Olympiad showed commissions of the Department of Theory and Practice of Foreign Languages headed by Beisembayeva Zh. A. their good knowledge of English, skills of listening to authentic English texts, speed reading and understanding, finding answers to numerous questions, keywords. According to the results of the 1st round, which included listening and reading, 121 participants out of 385 went to the 2nd round – the speaking stage. For some participants, this tour was a difficult, but surmountable task, and many of them were able to demonstrate good skills of unprepared oral presentation in English on a given topic. For example, “The person I would like to be like”, “The place I have never been to, but I would like to visit”, “Why I like this genre of music / literature”, etc.
After a lengthy discussion of the members of the commission for receiving answers from the participants of the Olympiad and the counting commission, the faculty of the Theory and Practice of Foreign Languages Department and foreign teachers of the Jose Umberto Baesa Estrada (USA) and Esrael Beyene Moges (Ethiopia) departments came to the following conclusion.
