Online scientific and methodological seminar entitled «Collaboration & Publication»

On October 12 2022, the Foreign Languages Department of ​​the Philological Faculty at the L.N. Gumilyov University held its first scientific and methodological seminar entitled "Collaboration & Publication" in the 2022-2023 academic  year. The seminar was conducted on the Microsoft Teams platform, as it was attended by Professor of the University of Minnesota, USA, Susan Jones and associate professor of the Department Tussupbekova M. Zh., who is having the research internship at the same university.  The topic was of a great interest to master students since they need strong research writing skills. The seminar’s topic was additional information for them to study the course "Academic Writing" within the discipline "Foreign language (professional)". Master students of ABF, MMF, ICTF and TEF faculties took an active part in the seminar.

The seminar covered the issues of publishing, theoretical and  practical aspects of writing articles, selection of the right journal, and authors’ collaboration.

The Department’s associate professor Tussupbekova M.Zh. opened the seminar by greeting her colleagues and introducing her supervisor Professor  Susan Jones, the University of Minnesota (Distinguished McKnight, College of Biological Sciences), PhD. Professor focused on the following aspects in her presentation entitled “Collaboration & Publication”:

finding co-authors for collaboration;

publishing in Scopus and Web of Science journals;

determining the topic of publication;

choosing the right journal make the publication readable and most successful.

According to the speaker, many authors are not flexible in course of writing scientific articles, but they can achieve results using certain guides, in particular, the search for the required journal, the structure of the article they create, the peer review process and answers to frequently asked questions. The speaker provided the audience with useful links to additional resources for finding the right co-authors, improving academic writing and as a result authoring in high-ranking journals.

Associate professor of the Department Kurmanayeva D.K., assistant professor of the Department Mukhtarkhanova A.M. and senior lecturer Tazhitova G.Z. asked about the research methods and methodology that can be used in articles writing, the journals editors’ attitude towards the scientific articles. The teachers of the Department also asked to recommend journals in the areas of Education and History of Education. All the participants thanked the speaker for the interesting presentation and useful links, expressed the confidence that the materials of the seminar will help in successful publication in high-ranking journals, and the hope in mutual collaboration.

Summing up the results of the seminar, the participants expressed a unique positive opinion about the relevance of the issues considered, their novelty and the value of the information received for further practice.
