Scientific and methodological seminar "Teaching and learning assessment practices: challenges"

On November 23rd the Foreign Languages Department of the Philology Faculty held a scientific and methodological seminar where the professor of Nazarbayev University Kathy L. Malone was invited. The seminar was devoted to the issue of teaching and learning assessment practices, in particular their theoretical and practical aspects, the development of effective assessment instruments and methods, assessment for improved teaching and learning.

       Senior lecturer, master of the department G.S. Kasbayeva was talking about the specifics of multiple intelligences theory in English language teaching. Multiple intelligence can be used as classroom assessment practices and teachers’ self-perceived assessment skills in teaching process.

       Senior lecturer, master of the department Zh.M. Kultanova in her report touched on the assessment strategies in enquiry-based learning that force students to master  strategies and skills of foreign language learning.

       The classroom assessment practices were covered by a senior teacher, master Zh.A. Karmenbayeva. The speaker demonstrated formative assessment elements in doing intermediate level exercises by dividing the participants in teams. The training was followed by an  analysis of formative assessment effectiveness.

           Summing up the seminar work, participants expressed positive opinions on the relevance of the issues discussed, the novelty and the value of the information received for future practices. The Seminar guests wished to further cooperate with the Foreign Languages Department ​​of the Philology Faculty via different  seminars and master classes.
