International Gumilyov Online Olympiad of English for students of non-linguistic educational programs

          April 17, 2021 the International Gumilyov Online Olympiad of English was held at the Faculty of Philology of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian University among the 1-2 year students of non-linguistic educational programs, organized by the Department of Foreign languages.   

This Olympiad is dedicated to the work of L.N. Gumilyov, an outstanding historian, ethnologist, geographer and philosopher of our time, the author of the passionate theory of ethnogenesis.

The International Olympiad was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Associate Professor Beisenbay Ardak Bakytovich: “The Eurasian National University pays special attention to training specialists with knowledge of a foreign language for the development of priority sectors of the economy that are responsible to the state and society for the results of their activities. The Department of Foreign Languages ​​does a lot of work on the formation of linguistic, professionally oriented, socio-cultural, communicative and cognitive competencies of students, which provide a future specialist with the opportunity to carry out effectively their professional activities using a foreign language as a tool of professional activity. Therefore, we can say with confidence that the results of the international Olympiad will be an impetus for further improvement, improving the quality of training specialists with knowledge of the English language! "

 

The Head of the Department of Academic Affairs L.S. Sabitova made a welcoming speech on behalf of the university administration. She expressed gratitude to the organizers of the international Olympiad represented by the head of the department, Associated professor Sagimbayeva D.E., as well as members of the organizing committee, senior teachers Toguzbaeva G.M., Otyzbaeva K.Zh. and she wished all the participants fruitful work and great success.

 

 

 

 

 

 

After that, a welcoming speech and parting words were made by: Y. Miller, manager of the international language center of Nur-Sultan "Interpress", Mohammed Asad Khan, certified trainer in IELTS (Global Language Training), Great Britain; Ubaka Precious Spik, the invited professor, EDU Stream, Nigeria; Ejaz Ahmad, the invited professor of L.N. Gumilyov ENU, Pakistan.

 

147 students took part in the Olympiad, 29 of which are representatives of such countries as: Russia, Hungary, France, China, India, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan.

 

Kazakhstan was represented by students of the following universities: Abylai Khan Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages ​​(Almaty), D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University (Ust-Kamenogorsk), Karaganda State University named after I. Academician E.A. Buketov (Karaganda), Zhetysu State University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov (Taldy-Kurgan), Kazakh Humanitarian Law University named after M.S. Narikbayev (Nur-Sultan), University of Turan-Astana ( Nur-Sultan), Astana Medical University (Nur-Sultan), Kazakh University of Technology and Business (Nur-Sultan), L.N. Gumilyov ENU (Nur-Sultan).

 

 

The Olympiad was held on the Google forms platform in two rounds:

The 1st round of the online Olympiad consisted of Listening and Reading, students were divided into 3 virtual teams. Moderators were: master G. Musabayeva, master Zhanaeva Zh.A., master Kozhakhmetova S.N., master Zhandildinova A.M.

The participants were given 1 hour to complete the first round, during which they completed tasks of varying complexity. Listening consisted of 4 parts with 5 questions, and the Reading section consisted of 3 parts with 10 questions each of them.

 

 

At the end of the round, the results were announced and only 33 participants entered the 2nd round. The 2nd round was an oral communication on the topic: "LN Gumilyov's legacy through the eyes of the modern generation."

The Olympiad was held on the Google Meet platform, the participant's knowledge was assessed according to a 100-point system on the Google doc platform.

 

 

Examination of students’ oral speech participating in the Olympiad was carried out by three commissions among the teaching staff of Foreign Languages ​​Department (Tusupbekova M.Zh. - candidate of pedagogical sciences, assistant professor; Mukhtarkhanova A.M. - candidate of pedagogical sciences, Associate Professor; Musina S.K. - Master of Ped. Sciences, Senior Lecturer, Nurpeisova A.Kh. - Master of Ped. Sciences, Senior Lecturer); manager of the international language testing center "Interpress" in Nur-Sultan - Y. Miller, as well as foreign specialists-teachers of English: Mohammed Asad Khan (Great Britain), Ubaka Precious Spik (Nigeria), Ejaz Ahmad (Pakistan), Ferenc Daniel Magyar (Hungary).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

All students who participated in the 2nd round perfectly demonstrated their skills and abilities in speaking English, which were assessed according to the criteria (speaking, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, accuracy, etc.).

The members of the commission highlighted the answers: Farge Climan Thierry Michel from France, a student of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Technological University (Russia), Hajiyeva Jasmin (Astana Medical University), as well as students of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian university (FNS, Chemistry-12) and Daniyarbekov Eldar (TEF, Electricity-12), who showed competent speech, excellent knowledge of the topic, the ability to freely express thoughts in English. Considering L.N. Gumilyov as the founder of the idea of ​​Eurasianism, the students tried to analyze the features of the scientist's ideas, critically assessing the scientific contribution and contradictions of Gumilyov's life path.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the end of the Olympiad, the members of the commission shared their thoughts. Ubaka Precious Spik thanked the organizers of the Olympiad and noted the high informational value of the topics offered to students. Ferenc Daniel Magyar expressed special gratitude: “As I was honoured to observe the Olympiad as a jury member I've been enlightened about Lev Gumilyov's life, works and impact to the modern society. I'm glad to see that there are so many students who wish to cultivate their knowledge regarding him - since he was such an exemplary person. The competition was truly intriguing we could witness some excellent demonstrations from the students."

In general, all members of the jury and participants were satisfied and sincerely grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Olympiad.
