In the framework of the International scientific-practical conference "Problems of multilingualism in a poly-ethnic space" by the Department of Foreign Philology of the Faculty of Philology L.N. Gumilyov ENU was organized on November 29, 2019 by a guest lecturer Tatyana Alexandrovna Burkova, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Head of the Department of Romano-Germanic Linguistics and Foreign Literature of M.Akmulla Bashkir State Pedagogical University. (Ufa, Bashkortostan, Russian Federation).
The theme of her two-hour lecture, “Language as a Mirror of Culture,” as part of the study of the subject “Language and Intercultural Communication”.
The lecture was attended by students, doctoral students and teachers of the Department of Foreign Philology.
During the interactive lecture, issues such as:
1. A picture of the world created by language and culture.
2. Categorization of culture by E. Hall: the concept of cultural grammar.
3. Categorization of culture according to G. Hofstede: the concept of mental programs.
4. Language universals.
5. National-cultural semantics of linguistic units.
Students who study this subject interestedly joined the discussion, asked questions and demonstrated their knowledge in the field of intercultural communication.
