Foreign languages department of the Faculty of Philology held an annual International Gumilyov online Olympiad

On April 9, 2022, the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Philology of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University held the 2nd International Gumilyov Online English Language Olympiad among students of 1-2 courses of non-linguistic specialties of universities in Kazakhstan and universities from some other countries. The Olympiad was dedicated to one of the leading topics of 2022, namely "Fundamental Science: Innovation and Human Development"

The purpose of the Olympiad is to increase the motivation to learn English and expand the socio-cultural and linguo-cultural competences of students, within the framework of the scientific and professional sphere.

More than 190 students of 1-2 courses of non-linguistic specialties of higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan, as well as near and far abroad, became participants in the annual International Gumilyov Online Olympiad. Participating universities: East Kazakhstan Technical University named after D. Serikbaev (Ust-Kamenagorsk), Almaty Humanitarian University (Almaty), Zhetysu University named after. I. Zhansugurova (Taldykorgan), Aktobe Regional University named after K. Zhubanov (Aktobe), Almaty Technological University (Almaty), University named after. Shakarim (Semey), Karaganda University of Kazpotrebsoyuz (Karaganda), Kazakh National Women's Pedagogical University (Almaty), North-Kazakhstan State University named after Manash Kozybaev (Petropavlovsk), Astana Medical Academy (Nur-Sultan), Eurasian Law Academy named after. YES. Kunaev (Almaty), Kazakh University of Technology and Business (Nur-Sultan), NAO Kokshetau University named after Sh. Ualikhanov (Kokshetau), NAO Toraigyrov University (Pavlodar), Kostanay Engineering and Economic University. In addition there are also students from foreign universities took part in the Olympiad, such as Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (Russia, St. Petersburg), Voronezh State University of Engineering Technologies (Russia, Voronezh), Kyrgyz State University. I. Arabaeva (Kyrgyz Republic, Bishkek), Jinzhou Medical University (Jinzhou, Liaoning, China), as well as exchange students from India and Pakistan, who are now students of the Astana Medical Academy in Nur-Sultan.

 

 

The International Olympiad was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Beisenbay Ardak Bakhytovich, noting the importance of this event in the framework of promoting the study of foreign languages ​​among young people in the light of innovation and human development. To increase the country's competitiveness and economic growth, it is the development of science and innovation that remains a priority. Developed science is the main condition for improving the living standards of the population. And the study of English as the language of science and technology plays a dominant role.

 

The welcoming speech to the participants and guests of the Olympiad was made by the manager of the international language center "InterPress" Nur - Sultan Miller Yulia Alexandrovna; Head of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Philology, Ph.D., Associate Professor Sagymbaeva Zhannat Yelemessovna.

                                             

 

The invited guests include PhD Gertrude Schott, Associate Director for Academic Affairs, Department of Education, Middlesex University; Fatis Thompson, Lecturer at the Center for Preparatory Studies at Nazarbayev University; Miller Julia, manager of the international language center "Inter Press" in Nur-Sultan, who were experts in evaluating the results of the 3rd round of the Olympiad. The commission also included Tusupbekova M.Zh., Ph.D., ass. professor at ENU L.N. Gumilyov, Mukhtarkhanova A.M., Ph.D., acting Associate Professor of ENU named after L.N. Gumilyova, Kurmanaeva D.K., PhD, ass. professor at ENU L.N. Gumilyov. 

 

                                             

 

The International Olympiad was held in 3 rounds. As part of the first round, listening was conducted, in the second round, students read the text and performed a number of post-text tasks, the purpose of which was to determine the level of reading comprehension. In the third round, students demonstrated knowledge and communication skills in English in the field of science, innovation and human development.

According to the results of the international Olympiad, the winners were Boronets David - a student of the East Kazakhstan Technical University named after D. Serikbayev and Zhansaya Duisengaliyeva - a student of the Astana Medical Academy in Nur-Sultan.

The second prize-winning place was taken by: Adilkanov Paryz - a student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyova, Kandybko Artem - student of the Kokshetau Agrotechnical University named after. Sh. Ualikhanov, Daut Bekzat - student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyova, Belaya Polina - student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyov, Tansykbaev Eldar - student of the Pavlodar National University. S. Toraigyrova, Bondarenko Rodion - student of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Peter the Great.

The third prize was awarded to: Gubasheva Malika - a student of the Nur-Sultan Medical Academy, Berikova Madina - a student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilev, Erzatova Merey - student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyova, Amangeldykyzy Erkezhan - student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyov,Kalandarova Dalida is a student of the Eurasian Law Academy named after YES. Kunaeva Almaty, Maratkyzy Togzhan - student of the Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages. Abylai Khan of Almaty, Onashbay Daniyar - student of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyov, Khambarov Abylai - student of the Aktobe Regional University. K. Zhubanova, Shahid Javaid (India) - student of the Astana Medical Academy, Nur-Sultan.

All winners were awarded diplomas. Letters of thanks were awarded to teachers who successfully prepared the participants, as well as educational organizations whose students took part in the Olympiad.
