The research activity of the Department of Foreign Languages aims at studying theoretical and practical issues:
· foreign philology;
· comparative and comparative linguistics;
· linguodidactics;
· multilingualism and intercultural communication.
The themes are the key research topics for the faculty members of the department in the framework of the grant projects, individual research, resulted in publications in peer-reviewed international journals, as well as in journals recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
A high indicator of the scientific activity of the department is the enrollment of faculty in master's and doctoral studies and the subsequent successful viva for master's degrees (Nurbekova G.Zh., Arystankulova G.U., Smagulova B..G, Mussina S.K., Khamitova A.G., Nurgaliyeva U.S., Tolegenova Zh.B.) and PhD (Kurmanaeva D.K., Balkhimbekova P.Zh.).
Faculty of the Foreign Languages Department focus on professional development: constantly improve their professional level and take an active part in academic mobility programs. The faculty members undergo professional development courses and language internships, participate in international conferences with articles both in Kazakhstan and abroad (Russia, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, Germany, France, Poland ).
At the department, there is a scientific and methodical seminar on topical problems of teaching foreign languages in non-linguistic specialties in higher education. Due to the growing interest in these problems, the scientific and methodological seminars of the department have reached a new interuniversity level. Every year department of foreign languages holds international seminars. In 2017 conducted an international seminar "Peculiarities of teaching foreign languages in multilingualism" and an international scientific and methodical webinar "Improving the methodology of teaching foreign languages: a platform for the exchange of progressive practice." In 2018 2 international methodical seminars were held with participation of foreign professors. In 2019, the Department of Foreign Languages of the Philological Faculty of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumilyov held an international scientific and methodological seminar on the topic "Multilingualism in higher education: challenges and opportunities."Practitioners involved in multilingual education and intercultural communication exchanged experiences and made presentations. Among the participants were scientists from Poland, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
In 2020, staff of the department participated in several projects: Sagimbayeva J.E. assistant professor, Ph.D. - the project of modernization of secondary education (World Bank-MON RK), expert in developing requirements for textbooks; Tussupbekova M.Zh. asst. professor, Ph.D. - "Formation of a professional multilingual personality of a new type in the conditions of multilingual education of the Republic of Kazakhstan", participant of the Republican project; Nurpeisova A.H., master, senior lecturer - "SMARTCITY: Innovative Approach towards a Master Program on Smart Cities Technologies", co-author of the laboratory workshop on programming Lego Mindstorms EV3 in English; Sultan D.G., Master, Senior Lecturer - Modernization of Pedagogical Education (World Bank-MON RK), Coordinator of Higher Education.
In 2020, a scientific and methodological seminar "Strengthening foreign languages teaching: challenges, approaches, technologies" was held. In October 2020, the scientific and methodological online seminar "The use of digital resources in teaching foreign languages" and the international scientific and methodological online seminar "Becoming a better teacher: exploring professional development" were held on the Microsoft Teams platform in April.At the seminar, Dr. Gabriel Barboulet from the University of Alba Iulia named after "December 1, 1918" (Alba Iulia, Romania) made a report on the topic "The Role of the English teacher in a Global Society".
In the first half of 2021, on the eve of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the Faculty of Philology successfully hosted the International Scientific and Practical Online Conference in English "Multicultural communication: modern issues of foreign language teaching". Also, within the framework of the Decade of Science, an international scientific and practical online seminar "Distance learning in foreign languages teaching: best practices" was successfully held at the Faculty of Philology on the Microsoft Teams platform. Also in 2021, a scientific and methodological online seminar was held for the teaching staff of the department and with a professor from the University of Exeter (England) Debra Myhell on the topic “Writing for publication”. Kurmanaeva Dina Kasymbekovna, PhD, Associate Professor published the monograph Culture Component in Foreign Language Teaching - Nur-Sultan: L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, 2021. - 152 p. As part of the Decade of Science at the Faculty of Philology, on April, 2021, an international scientific and practical online seminar "Distance learning in foreign languages teaching: best practices" was held with the participation of the professor. On October 2022, the scientific and methodological seminar entitled "Collaboration & Publication" was held. The seminar was conducted on the Microsoft Teams platform, as it was attended by Professor of the University of Minnesota, USA, Susan Jones and associate professor of the Department Tussupbekova M. Zh., who was having the research internship at the same university. On February, 2023 the Foreign Languages Department of the Philological Faculty at the L.N. Gumilyov University held its regular scientific and methodological seminar entitled "Becoming a Better Teacher: Exploring Professional Development". The following lecturers presented their topics of speeches: 1) Adaptive Learning Systems- - Jeffrey Stier, lecturer at Saybayev University, Almaty 2) The formation of the value orientations of the future specialists by means of foreign language - master, senior lecturer of the department Kasbayeva G.S.
In addition, the department annually initiates the holding of city and regional olympiads in foreign languages for undergraduates of non-linguistic specialties, as well as round table discussions, song and verse contests, public speaking in foreign languages, quizzes for the countries of studied languages.
In 2020 Faculty of Philology, Foreign languages department together with Faculty of international affairs, Foreign languages department held the International Olympiad in Foreign Languages with the sponsorship of Interpress Distribution LLP and the US Embassy. This Olympiad was dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great poet and writer Abai Kunanbayuly for 1-2 year students of non-linguistic specialties of universities in Kazakhstan, near and far abroad. The jury of this Olympiad were foreign guests: Hazar Flashberg (Public Diplomacy Associate), Robert Gordyn - Academic English Instructor (Nazarbayev University), Jacob Levitan - Academic English Instructor ENU (EANU volunteer, under the “Go Nomads” program), Anita Traute Kahl - English Language Instructor (LLP "Parasat"), and Miller Yu.A. - consultant-methodologist (LLP "Inter Press Distribution".
In the second half of 2021, at the Faculty of Philology of the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilyov hosted the International Gumilyov Online Olympiad in English among students of 1-2 courses of non-linguistic educational programs. This Olympiad is dedicated to the work of L.N. Gumilyov, an outstanding historian, ethnologist, geographer and philosopher of our time, the author of the passionate theory of ethnogenesis. Invited guests: Dean of the Faculty of Philology, ass. Professor Beisenbay A.B., Miller Yu.A., Manager of the International Language Center of Nur-Sultan "Interpress", Mohammed Asad Khan, certified trainer in IELTS (Global Language Training), UK; Ubaka Precious Spik, EDU Stream Visiting Professor, Nigeria; Ejaz Ahmad, visiting professor of L.N. Gumilyov ENU, Pakistan
In 2022 at the Faculty of Philology of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University hosted the 2nd International Gumilyov Online Olympiad in English among students of 1-2 courses of non-linguistic specialties on the topic "Innovations and Human Development" organized by Foreign Languages Department. 2nd stage of the Olympiad in the 1st virtual team (Room 1). Members of the commission: Ph.D., acting Associate Professor of the Department Mukhtarkhanova Ainagul Madievna and foreign experts, teacher of the Center for Preparatory Studies, Nazarbayev University, Fatih Thompson and English teacher from Nigeria, Preshes Ubaka Speke. In the second virtual team, the jury members were Dr. Gertrude Schotte - Deputy Director for Research Doctor of Professional Studies (Dr.Prof), Department of Education, Middlesex University, Tusupbekova M. Zh. - Ph.D., Ass. Professor from Foreign Languages Department of the Faculty of Philology, Vatutina Zh.P. - Master, Art. Lecturer in Foreign Languages Department of the Faculty of Philology. In the third virtual team, the jury members were Kurmanaeva Dina Kasymbekovna - PhD, ass. Professor from Foreign Languages Department of the Faculty of Philology.
Within the framework of the scientific student club in 2021 (February and March), , reports were made by acting associate professors Ustelimova N.A., Tussupova G.K., Mukhtarkhanova A.M., senior teacher, masters Otyzbayeva K.Zh., Kamizinova A.K., Nurgalieva U.S. An online tour to the “American Corner at L.N. Gumilyov ENU" was organized. Also senior teacher, master Dyusengaliyeva A.A. spoke on the topic “IELTS Language Tests for Foreign Scholarships and Acad. exchange"
In 2022 the scientific club “Foreign language for solving practical problems” has entered into cooperation with the language center Madinalingua School. School principal Nurmanova Madina Ramazanovna supported the members of the science club and provided a free visit to the speaking club. Every Saturday, students of the science club can practice English, diversify their circle of communication, and broaden their horizons.
The first meeting with students was organized in October 2022. The students were familiarized with the plan and charter of the club. On October 31, 2022, members of the scientific club "Foreign Language for Solving Practical Problems" again visited the speech club at the language center of the MadinaLingua school. On November 8, 2022, a meeting was held for 1st year students with the coordinator of the American Corner, located in the scientific library of the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilyov. The scheduled meeting was organized by senior teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Philology Nurbekova G.Zh., Zhusupova G.M. and the head of the scientific circle of the department Kuzar Zh.N. The purpose of the meeting is to familiarize students with the activities of the information resource center "America's Corner" and its purpose. On December 13, 2022, schoolchildren entered the Happy English Quiz intellectual game and took part in the 10th game of the 2nd season, consisting of 7 rounds. On February 28, 2023, Senior Lecturer Otyzbayeva K. Zh. and Chairman of the Science Club Kuzar Zh.N. held a seminar on the topic “Scholarships of the countries of the studied languages; Tasks of the Language Olympiad” for undergraduates and students of various specialties. On March 14, 2023, a seminar was held for graduate students and students on writing scientific articles “Approbation of scientific reports for student scientific conferences”, two speakers spoke: Ph.D., Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages Mukhtarkhanova A.M. and Ph.D. Balkhimbekova P.Zh.
During 2019 teaching staff of the department published 7 articles in indexed journals Scopus and Thomsen Reuters, 5 articles in international journals and Russian Science Citation Index journals, 12 articles in journals of RK, 10 articles scientific conferences of RK, 4 articles in scientific conferences abroad. In 2020 1 article was published in international scientific journals Web of Science, 5 articles in foreign journals and journals of Russian Science Citation Index journals, 7 articles in journals of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 9 articles in conferences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 6 articles in scientific conferences in abroad. In 2021 the department published 2 articles in the Scopus rating journals, 6 articles in foreign journals and Russian Science Citation Index journals, 5 articles in the journals of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 12 articles in conferences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 7 articles in scientific conferences in abroad. In 2022 the department published 4 articles in the Scopus and Web of Science rating journals, 6 articles in foreign journals and Russian Science Citation Index journals, 8 articles in the journals of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 16 articles in conferences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 3 articles in scientific conferences in abroad.
