Reports on Practices and Internships

Foreign internships for Master students:

offline & online

One of the most important stages in mastering the postgraduate educational program is a foreign scientific internship which allows master students both to get acquainted with the educational system of other countries and to work out their scientific research in the framework of the copyright concepts of foreign scholars. And in this regard, the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (Head of the Department E.A. Zhuravlyeva) responsibly considers the selection of a foreign educational center so that the scientific base would fully correspond to the specialty and subject matter of the research conducted by master students.

On May 23 2022 professional practice started in groups RF-32 and RF-22 of the educational program "6B02306 – Philology: Russian Philology".

It has become a good tradition of the department to conduct summer professional practices of bachelors in collaboration with Russian universities. This practice is conducted on the basis of Surgut State Pedagogical University, the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (ENU) and the Department of Philological Education and Journalism (SurGPU) have developed two joint practice programs.

At the introductory conference held at Zoom, the Dean of the Faculty of Philology of SurGPU N.V. Ganushchak, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics E.A. Zhuravleva, Head of the Department of Philological Education and Journalism E.I. Breusova, Head of the practice from ENU G.K. Ayupova addressed the students. The program and requirements for practical training were presented, a schedule of classes with leading specialists of the Faculty of Philology of Surgut was planned.

In March 2020 four groups of Master students planned to go on an internship to the leading scientific centers: the Institute of Slavistics at the Dresden Technical University (Germany), the University of Poznan (Poland), the Kazan Federal University (Russia), the Minsk State Linguistic University (Belarus). Internship programs were developed, articles for conference participation were written, and presentations on scientific research were prepared.

However, before closing the boarders due to the situation of the spread of coronavirus infection, only one group managed to go on an internship.

Master students of the educational program “Russian Language and Literature” Karina Zhyrymbaeva, Symbat Esenbaeva, Zhazira Kenzhekhanova, Aknur Uzakbaeva and Laura Nurbek successfully completed an internship at the Institute of Slavistic Studies of Dresden University in Germany. Good partnership relations with the Institute of Slavistic created all the conditions for the effective work of interns.

Master students were impressed by Dresden Library containing a variety of book collections in all areas of science. The library provides with opportunities for working with print media as well as with electronic databases, there is free access to the Internet and places for relaxation.

Rich book collections on Slavistic studies allowed to study a lot of new literature on the themes of master’s theses. Almost all the time, free from consultations, master students spent in the library.

By prior arrangement between the Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics E.A. Zhuravlyeva and the Head of the Institute of Slavistic Studies Holger Kusse, Master students made presentations on completed scientific work in the scientific seminar.

After presentation the master students were asked questions and then they were given recommendations on dissertation research, as well as comments on the relevance and significance of their dissertations. Upon completion of the internship, the master students were awarded certificated. They also received protocols on the pre-defense of master’s theses at the scientific and methodological colloquium of the Institute of Slavistics with the recommendations of foreign scientists.

Closing borders between countries and the impossibility of leaving made the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics set the task of finding an alternative internship. Unfortunately, the universities where the internships were planned did not have the possibilities to immediately switch to the remote mode of internships since the circumstances in each country were different.

The task that the department had to solve included not only selecting a university having switched to the remote mode, but also proving the opportunity to make the internship as effective as possible for master students in terms of distance learning. Good scientific contacts of the department carried out in the framework of agreements between ENU and foreign partner universities helped in this matter.

One of the universities that offered excellent working conditions in the remote format was the Ural State Mining University http://www.ursmu.ru/ (Yekaterinburg, the Russian Federation). In addition, the research conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Business Communication at this university corresponded to the directions of the dissertation research of our master students. The department cooperating with our university for several years has done everything to accept master students at its base.

On April 13th an installation conference for the internship was held on the MS Teams platform attended by the staff of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, 17 master students with their scientific supervisors and the representatives of the Department of Foreign Languages and Business Communication of the  USMU.

The conference was opened by the Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics E.A. Zhuravlyeva who presented the goals, objectives and plans of the scientific internship. Then the floor was given to the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Business Communication L.G. Yusupova.

L.G. Yusupova acquainted the undergraduates with the history, structure, implementation areas of training, educational, scientific and international activities of the USMU, scientific research and leading specialists of the department. Particular attention in the report was paid to the provided opportunities to work with the scientific library system of the USMU and the technologies that it provides to users.

For interns – ENU postgraduates, free access to all library collections has been opened, there is also access to the library funds of the city of Yekaterinburg, in particular,  the Central City Library named after I.A. Gerzen.

Next, the floor was given to the second-year master students of the educational program “6M011800 Russian Language and Literature” Abdushukurova Әsel, Berdali Zhuldyz, Erlanova Madina, Zhaqypbek Makpal, Zhanibekova Kunarai, Kairbekova Gulayim, Nauatbek Alina, Zhaksymbekova (Seitzhaparova) Ulbolsyn, Chkambaeva Zhanar, Chukaeva Aigerim, Shaimardanova Zhanar, and the second-year master students of the educational program “6M020500 Philology: Russian Philology” Kozhakhmetova Dina, Medvedeva Vladlena, Musakanova Gulzira, Nugumanova Aliya, Sarbaeva Mariyam, Seitkhanova Asel.

Master students asked questions as part of their individual plans for the internship period. They received detailed answers for their questions.

The supervisors of master students pointed out the need for a scientific internship of 2-year graduate students to study the scientific works of foreign researchers and test the experimental material of the dissertation.

E.A. Zhuravleyva noted the importance of undergoing a foreign scientific internship by the second-year master students and pointed out to the good opportunities of conducting it in a remote format. The topics for future webinars and consultations up to April 21st  2020 were identified.

The Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics expresses its gratitude to the ENU leadership and the department of postgraduate education, as well as to the USMU leadership   for prompt coordination of all issues and preparation of an order for an internship.
