An online debate on the topic “Effective time management in the preparation of a dissertation” among 1st-year postgraduates

On November 28, 2020, senior teachers of Foreign Languages Department of the faculty of Philology Nurpessova A. Kh. and Sultan D. G. held an online debate on the topic: “Effective time management in the preparation of a dissertation” among 1st-year postgraduates majoring “Mathematics” and “Design” on the Microsoft Teams platform.

Dinara Gabbasovna gave a welcoming speech and introduced all the participants of the event.

Master- student Valentina Mezhenskaya demonstrated a slide on this topic, accompanied by brief theses for discussion. Such as,

      -   Do not put off writing a dissertation project in a long box

      -   Industrial practice should be perceived as an excellent hint for the upcoming dissertation

      -   It is necessary to clearly allocate time for writing a master's project

      -   The dissertation must be 99% ready for its pre-defense.

The postgraduates shared their perspectives on time devoted on thesis writing. Abylai Tursunbayev, quoting the words from the book by David Allen, noted that all people have 24 hours. However, while some people use their time wisely, others can no longer use their time wisely or for the benefit of themselves or others. In fact, the ability to organize time is the beginning of any prosperity. Tleuov Zhassulan and Sanat Nurzhanar agreed with him. Later Yerkin Arman gave an example of his mistakes made in the past in writing a thesis, and recommended that it is important to use time correctly. “To fix a new idea at any time, you need to have a pen and paper nearby, even when we are sleeping!”,  added Sameview Sheshan

To answer the following the question “What is your plan?”, Kanafina Saule stated that new ideas and suggestions in her dissertation will be used in her work in the future. And they will be her guide in her started business, since the topic of the dissertation is very related to her activities.

Ayan Isabekova advised that it is necessary to allocate more time in writing a dissertation to search for information and select literature, as there may be difficulties in finding suitable material.

At the end of the debate Aigul Chirtina announced a few points. Supporting undergraduates, she said that their work makes them part of the academic community, that they can become part of the team and even earn money working in research team. The most important thing is the correct choice of the dissertation topic, which, in turn, should cause delight. It is also necessary to be constantly in touch with the academic supervisor in order to brilliantly cope with the task.

In addition, Aigul Khairtayevna introduced the participants with the "Pomidoro technique".

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. In the classic technique, the "tomatoes" time periods last for half an hour: 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest.

Aigul Khairtayevna advised master students to jointo the chat of Enrique Riga, a foreign student who also uses this method, and together spend the time effectively in writing a dissertation to know that we are not alone and support each other!
